CEREC, One Visit Crowns

SD Cerec Logo
Times change, and so do dental procedures. Pacific Oak Dental is always up on the latest technology in dentistry, and Dr. Thompson is trained to use new instruments that are created. Thanks to modern technology, you no longer need to make two visits to have the tooth crowning procedure done.

The CEREC Cad technology makes it possible for you to have your tooth restored with a crown in one visit. There are still certain circumstances that require us to send crowns to a dental lab, but most crowns are done in-house.

What Is CEREC?

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) is an instrument that we use to restore your teeth. The CEREC allows us to provide you with ceramic fillings that are naturally colored and can be bonded to your teeth quickly.

With this instrument, we no longer have to provide you with plastic temporary crowns while we wait for your permanent crowns to come in from a dentist laboratory. We can do the entire crown procedure in one day, thanks to CEREC one visit crowns.

How Does It Work?

This procedure requires Dr. Thompson to use a Computer Aided Design, also referred to as CAD. CAD is a type of technology that incorporates a camera, milling machine and computer into one piece of equipment. The equipment, or camera, takes a picture of your damaged tooth. Once the picture has been taken, it will display on a computer screen, and we will begin to design your crown, based on the impression that was transferred to the computer through the camera. At this time, the Computer Aided Manufacturing begins, and your restoration is designed. After this step is complete, the bonding process begins. Once the crown is bonded to your tooth, the CEREC One Visit process is complete.

Changing the Color of Your Crowns

You no longer have to worry about your crowns not looking natural, because of coloring. With CEREC, you can have your crowns customized to look like your natural tooth. The crowns or inlays will be customized on a screen, and colored to match the color of your teeth, or as close as possible. This procedure does not require a lot of time. In fact, we can complete this process within 2 hours; sometimes we only need 45 minutes for this process. The completion times will vary, depending on your teeth and their complexity.

CEREC Misconceptions

A procedure this modern should cost a fortune, right? Not so! You are not only saving time by only having to come in for one visit, but you are not being charged more for the one day process. The type of material you use for your crowns will vary in pricing; one option will be more expensive than the other, but the actual CEREC one visit crowns are no more expensive than the two-visit procedure.

CEREC Case Studies

Case Study #1: Single Crown

Doctor: Todd Ehrlich, DDS
Problem: Recurrent caries of an amalgam
Tooth number: #12
Material: eMax CAD HT A2 bonded with Multilink Automix (yellow)
Patient time in chair: 1 hour, 15 minutes

This was a case that was not treatment planned for an indirect restoration. On the x-rays, the amalgam had simple recurrent caries, and a direct composite resin restoration was planned. However, once the amalgam was removed, a fracture line was seen to go deep into the mesial surface. Slight staining and no occlusal symptoms left me in a quandary: restore directly as an MOD but have potential difficulty with establishing an interproximal contact between the canine and the premolar. Or, conservatively cover the cusps and restore indirectly and digitally.

Case Study #2: Emergency Front Four

Doctor: Todd Ehrlich, DDS
Problem: Decay and replacement of one temporary crown
Tooth number: #7, #8, #9, #10
Material: Milled out of e.max; bonded with Multilink Automix
Patient time in chair: 2 hours, 30 minutes

This gentleman had been avoiding the dentist for over 6 years all the while having a temporary crown on his front tooth! It finally fell out, just days before he had a big client presentation. He realized that this was the last straw and he had to get something done, and fast! He couldn’t hide his teeth any longer.

He came into our office and was scheduled for four posts and crowns from 7-10. The other treatment would have to wait. His appointment was set and a lot of nitrous oxide was requested!

CEREC’s biogeneric calculation of the four restorations was completed and the restorations milled out of e.max. They were fired and inserted with Multilink Automix. His request for lighter restorations was not ignored, and he was very pleased. Even more because of his renewed self-confidence during his presentation. It even motivated him to continue the dental care that he neglected for so long!

Case Study #3: Two Veneers Before the Wedding

Doctor: Dr. Dhaval Patel

Patient time in chair: 2 hours, 30 minutes

This patient is a 55-year-old female who has always had a space between her upper centrals that she was not happy with. She chipped her teeth in an accident a few years ago and has been embarrassed to smile ever since. During her new patient exam, she revealed that her son was getting married in two weeks and that she was unhappy with her smile. I asked her if she would like to improve her smile, but she declined saying that it would take weeks to get veneers done and she is too busy with wedding preparations. When I told her that we could do her two veneers using CEREC digital impressions and milling in only one day and within a couple of hours, she was thrilled and immediately scheduled to get it done the very next day.
